Above is a demonstration of all the layers that go into creating a convincing particle system.

Building simple systems on top of each other and combining them together to create something fluid and dynamic.

This can also be useful in LOD creation since some of the subtler emitters of a particle system can simply be turned off in favour of the more noticeable ones.
